Ransomware has massively exploded in recent years and is fast becoming an ubiquitous threat for UK businesses.

A malicious attack on your organisation could be costly – not only in terms of the ransom being demanded, but also from lost revenue resulting from a major disruption to your day-to-day operations.

Ransomware explained

Ransomware is a type of malware that limits or prevents access to a computer, by locking it or some of the files on it until a ransom is paid.  Crypto ransomware encrypts certain files on a machine until the ransom has been paid.  There is no guarantee that files will be unlocked or decrypted if the ransom is paid and often payment will be requested in a cyptocurrency such as Bitcoins.

How might your business be targeted?

Ransomware can be downloaded from malicious or compromised websites or advertisements, delivered as email attachments or dropped by exploit kits.

What can you do to identify your vulnerabilities and reduce the risk of an attack

Ransomware is on the rise and unfortunately, it's impossible to say "I'm safe".

The good news is that there are some simple steps in certain areas that you can take to reduce the risk of an attack. The areas of focus are:

  •      Vulnerability management and patching
  •      Web filtering
  •      Advanced email security
  •      User awareness
  •      Controlling removable media
  •      Application control
  •      Data Backup

Should infection occur, it’s critical that the damage is limited - by ensuring that access control is managed effectively and that regular backups are taken, the disruption can be minimised.

We’re here to provide help and advice to ensure that you have a preventative strategy in place and that, in the event of a malicious attack, your business critical systems are backed up and up and running again as soon as possible.

We believe that a proactive approach to cyber security is the best form of defence. We encourage our clients to align their security practices with recognised Core Controls and this should immediately reduce the risk to your organisation.

Data Connect's SECURE Start and SECURE Advanced are both proven ways to help you do this, as is Cyber Essentials Accreditation.
